Tim Lee – uit de Windbreakers (u weet wel) – heeft weer een soloplaat gemaakt. Een album dat opvallend opent met ‘I Wanna Believe’ dat zowel muzikaal – die jankende gitaarsound – als vocaal zwaar op R.E.M. geënt is. En dan begint een plaat niet eens gek.

Voor de rest van de cd blijft hij bij zijn leest. Een sound die aanschurkt tegen southern blues-rock, rootsrock en een vleugje garage en psychedelica. Weinig mis mee; transparant geproduceerd door onder andere R.E.M.-producer Mitch Easter. En vooral dát is te horen. Die Dinosaur Jr.- & R.E.M.-sfeer raak je vanaf het begin niet meer kwijt en blijft heerlijk doorijlen. In stem én gitaar.

Alsof je luistert naar een pure Michael Stipe en Co. vóór de dolgedraaide pretenties en bombast. Die oprechtheid siert Tim Lee en daarmee No Discretion. Dit is misschien wel een postuum eerbetoon, zijn eerdere bands gingen immers aan het succes van The Replacements en R.E.M. ten onder. Misschien moeten we dan maar eens in kleine zalen gaan zien waar het vuur wél nog steeds brandt. Het is Tim Lee gegund.
